Douglas Avenue, Walthamstow Market, the 1980s, Frankie say Relax…

Created by Chris 3 years ago

I just wanted to record my happy memories of Joyce, and indeed Jim, whom I first met in the mid-1980s after becoming friends with Paul.

Paul and I met at journalism college in Sheffield and became firm friends, visiting one another’s family homes. I will never forget the warmth of the welcome I received from Joy and Jim - it has never been bettered!

I was also lucky enough to come from a very loving home, and in Joy and Jim I immediately recognised the same gentle kindness and giving nature of my own parents. It is no surprise that my mum and dad, too, became good friends with the Newmans.

The love and kindness they radiated has stuck with me for all these years. I knew it was rare then, and it is perhaps even more so now.

Joyce and Jim made the world a kinder and better place, and I am so sad that they have gone, but I feel privileged to have known them and been in their company.

I send all my love and best wishes to Paul (my friend for life), Matthew, Hannah and family.
